![]() This is where the Bolshaya Almatinka River is joined by the river Prokhodnaya, and so suitably enough, they built a big hydropower station there called GES-2. Stay strong! Ride the bus to where it turns around at a convenience store. The stop at the bottom of the valley is next to the Park of the First President, and if you sit there waiting for Bus 28, you'll get pressured repeatedly by passing taxi drivers to just give up already and pay 300 tenge for a ride up. There are only a couple of actual buses, and they run all the way up and down the valley, so they only come by each stop about once an hour. Keep in mind, however, that the bus is exclusively for the patient. ![]() Very few people know that you can get there with public transportation: Bus 28. Alma-Arasan is a place famous for its wedding halls and its shashlyk barbecue joints, and above all that commercial hum there's some scenic nature to be found. One river is the Malaya Almatinka ("The Little Almaty"), which runs by Medeo, and the other is the Bolshaya Almatinka ("The Big Almaty") that runs through a place called Alma-Arasan. It looks like a thrilling ride, but check your brakes first, will you? Bus 28 to the GES-2 Hydropower StationĪlmaty's foothills have two major river valleys that provide passage into the mountains. A lot of people like to rent bikes, haul them onto Bus 12, ride it to the last stop, then let gravity pull them all the way down Gornaya and Lenin street back to town. Some start from the Shymbulak resort higher up the valley (you can take a cable car there, but it's a bit pricy), while some start at the bus stop called Prosveschenets a little bit below. None of the routes, it should be noted, start right at the rink. I still have a lot more hiking to do before I can give any authoritative advice, but Stephen at Caravanistan has a few good routes listed. I've always found the rink itself, and the mud-slide dam behind it, to be a little underwhelming, so remember: it's the surrounding nature that makes Medeo a worthwhile destination. The Medeo ice skating arena is often at the top of to-do lists for Almaty visitors, and when you see its location in the scenic Malaya Almatinka valley, you'll understand why.
